The Smart Choice for Young Eyes

Myopia Management with Optiswiss

The SMYLE FreeForm Technology – a joint development from Optiswiss and IOT, is based on the technical specifications from the Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI).

SMYLE lenses offer the best vision at all distances thanks to the fully correcting central area. Surrounding this area, there are the technology areas, whose special feature lies in the fact that their arrangement is calibrated to the natural asymmetry of the retina. Peripheral defocus can demonstrably slow down ocular elongation and at the same time the integrated addition provides accommodative support.

Myopia and its consequences

Worldwide, more and more people are affected by the consequences of progressive myopia. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned of the impact on the global health system.

Holden BA, Fricke TR, Wilson DA, et al. Global Prevalence of Myopia and High Myopia and Temporal Trends from 2000 through 2050. Ophthalmology. 2016;123(5):1036-1042.

What does progressive myopia mean?

A near-sighted eye is usually longer than an eye with normal eyesight. If the child’s eye grows more strongly than necessary, the short-sightedness becomes stronger and progressive myopia develops. This means that there is a continuous increase in the prescription values towards the negative.

What are the consequences?

If the eye grows in length, the structures of the eye can change and the risk of serious eye diseases in later adulthood increases greatly.

Aesthetics
Dependence on glasses increases with worsening defective vision. In addition, the aesthetics and wearing comfort suffer. The lenses become thicker and heavier, reduction effects become visible.

What are the risk factors?

Our environmental and living conditions have changed significantly. Our children are increasingly looking at things close up and spending a lot of time using modern means of communication such as tablets or smartphones. Time spent outdoors often misses out.

The risk of developing myopia depends on the reading distance, among other factors. The longer you look at things close up, the greater the risk. A quick glance into the distance now and again enables the eyes to relax.

SMYLE lenses

The SMYLE lens design incorporates essential features from years of research by the Brien Holden Vision Institute. It was precisely tailored to their specifications and the technology was officially licensed.

European study

While previous studies on the effectiveness of different treatment
options for progressive myopia in children have focused primarily on the
Asian region, extensive results are available for SMYLE lenses from Europe.

SMYLE lenses reduce the progression of the myopia by 39 % after
12 months compared to single vision lenses.
All children who took part
in the study described visual acuity as perfect to good with high visual comfort
at all distances.

Visual comfort

SMYLE Lenses provide excellent visual comfort.

Visual performance at all distances

The performance of SMYLE lenses is comparable to that of single-vision lenses.

Visual sharpness

All children confirm good to very good sharpness while wearing SMYLE lenses.

Functional zones and how they work

Peripheral defocus

Numerous studies have shown that peripheral myopic defocus slows down eye length growth.

For this reason, SMYLE lenses contain a peripheral defocus area, which – slowly ascending – connects directly to the central full correction zone (diameter 7 mm). Successful treatment with this working
principle results in reduced myopia in adulthood.

Asymmetrical defocus

The myopic retina is nasally steeper than temporal. In order to meet the physiological challenges and to guarantee the most successful treatment possible, SMYLE lenses have a higher plus effect in the temporal range. This results in a stronger defocus in the nasal retinal area.

Accommodation support

Accommodation and vergence dysfunctions are common features of progressive myopia. In order
to relieve eyes at this point and improve visual comfort, SMYLE lenses achieve additional power
of up to 2.20 dpt in the lower range.
